Call Before You Dig

Dig Safely

Underground power lines and other utilities run under streets and sidewalks as well as under yards and homes. Accidentally digging into these lines could cause an electrical shock hazard and disrupt electrical service in the neighborhood. Damage to an underground power line could even result in electrocution.

If your family is undertaking a digging project, make sure they contact your utility locator center, by dialing 811, to make sure underground power lines and other utilities are clearly marked so people can dig a safe distance away from them.  Whether your family is planning to do the job themselves, or hire a professional, have them call 811 several days before digging begins. Any job requires a call, even planting a tree!

Call 811 before you dig.

How 811 Works

The 811 service notifies all the major utilities that have underground lines near the digging area. Within a few days, a worker from each utility will mark the location of each buried utility line so people can dig a safe distance away.
